Pear Varieties

Santa Maria Pear
The Santa Maria pear has a slightly flattened shape, excellent aroma, and is known for its durability during transport and long shelf life. It is highly productive — in some regions, it produces so abundantly that it has earned the nickname “branch-breaker pear.”
The harvest time varies depending on altitude. In areas around 300–400 meters above sea level, harvesting usually begins in the first two weeks of July. As altitude decreases, harvesting occurs earlier; as altitude increases, harvesting shifts to later weeks.
This variety is not recommended for coastal regions with mild climates. An altitude of at least 200 meters is advised. The tree grows upright and moderately vigorous, bearing large fruit even at an early age. The fruit is large, conical, light yellow with a pinkish blush. The flesh is white, juicy, sweet, and flavorful.
As a summer variety, Santa Maria pears are typically harvested from the last week of July to the first week of August. Due to their excellent storage qualities, they are one of the most widely grown pear varieties in Turkey and can be kept in cold storage until November or December.

Deveci Pear
The Deveci pear also has a slightly flattened shape, outstanding aroma, high durability for transport, and a long shelf life. Harvest time depends on altitude, typically starting in the first week of October at altitudes of 300–400 meters. As with other varieties, harvesting time shifts earlier at lower altitudes and later at higher elevations.
It is not recommended to plant Deveci pear trees in coastal areas with mild climates. However, with the use of dwarf or semi-dwarf rootstocks, Deveci pears can also be grown in pots — even indoors or on balconies — giving the joy of harvesting fresh fruit by hand. The pot used should have a minimum capacity of 10 liters, and the tree must be placed outdoors during the winter months to ensure fruit production.

Margarit Pear
Margarit is a highly productive variety and is widely cultivated across Turkey. The fruits are large, sometimes even very large. The neck and blossom end are narrow, while the middle section is noticeably swollen. The flesh is white, slightly gritty, moderately juicy, and has a medium flavor.
